Our DFG project \u201cSocial Ethics of the International Recruitment of Health Professionals\u201d was represented at the EuARe 2026 (European Academy of Religion) in Rome with the panel \u201cReligion and Work-Related Migration: Religious Actors and Critical Religious Perspectives\u201d.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s conference (30 June \u2013 3 July 2026) on the theme \u201cReligion and (In)Equality\u201d provided an outstanding platform for presenting initial research findings to an international audience and discussing them together.<\/p>\n

In the jointly organized panel, religious, ethical, and postcolonial dimensions of work-related migration were discussed from an interdisciplinary perspective. The focus was on the role of various actors and institutions in global migration processes\u2014particularly in the healthcare sector\u2014as well as the normative and critical perspectives that cultural and religious traditions offer on questions of justice, power, and vulnerability in work-related migration. <\/p>\n

The shortage of nursing and healthcare professionals in Germany and other industrialized countries is increasingly leading to international recruitment, often from countries in the Global South. This practice raises complex ethical questions: What responsibility do host countries and institutions have toward the recruited individuals and their countries of origin? What impact does this have on the health systems of the countries of origin and the right to health there? How can individual migration interests be reconciled with global justice and sustainability? <\/p>\n
